Avanti, LNER ou Lumo : Voyager en Train de Londres à Édimbourg
Introduction
Lorsque vous voyagez de Londres à Édimbourg en train, vous pouvez choisir parmi trois compagnies : Avanti, LNER ou Lumo. Dans ce guide, je vais comparer les trois opérateurs afin que vous puissiez faire le meilleur choix pour votre voyage.
Ma préférence va à LNER en raison de leurs trains plus fréquents et de leurs excellentes installations à bord. Cependant, cela ne veut pas dire que les autres options sont mauvaises.

Aperçu de l'Itinéraire
LNER et Lumo partent tous deux de la gare de King's Cross à Londres et voyagent le long de la ligne principale de la côte est. Avanti opère depuis la gare de London Euston et remonte la ligne principale de la côte ouest. Tous arrivent à la gare d'Édimbourg Waverley.
Lumo a les temps de trajet les plus rapides de Londres à Édimbourg avec 4 heures et 17 minutes, suivi de LNER, prenant 4 heures et 20 minutes. Avanti est le plus lent avec 5 heures et 40 minutes, c'est pourquoi j'évite Avanti pour cet itinéraire. Pour plus de détails sur Avanti, consultez le guide d'Omio Londres à Manchester.
Je conseille de ne pas prendre un vol de Londres à Édimbourg. Bien que le vol lui-même prenne environ 1 heure et 20 minutes, les aéroports de Londres sont loin du centre-ville. Une fois que vous tenez compte du trajet vers l'aéroport, des contrôles de sécurité et de l'attente, vous pourriez déjà être à mi-chemin d'Édimbourg à bord d'un train roulant à 125 mph (200 km/h), ce qui est une option beaucoup plus relaxante !
Expérience de Transport
Réserver sur Omio était facile. J'ai simplement choisi mon heure et ma classe de voyage, et en quelques instants après la réservation, mon billet était prêt à être utilisé !
Bien que LNER et Lumo exploitent des trains similaires construits par Hitachi, l'expérience à bord est assez différente, comme je le détaille ci-dessous.
Lumo
Lumo fonctionne sur un modèle à bas coût (pensez à Ryanair sur rails !). Avec seulement cinq services par jour, le choix est limité. Il y a des limites strictes de bagages (une petite et une moyenne valise seulement). Aucun objet encombrant ou vélo n'est autorisé.
Lumo n'offre que des sièges en classe standard, avec 25 rangées par voiture et seulement deux tables, donc l'espace pour les jambes est limité, et les voitures peuvent sembler étroites.
LNER
Les trains LNER de Londres à Édimbourg partent toutes les 30 minutes, avec 26 services par jour.
LNER offre une expérience de voyage plus agréable, avec un maximum de 23 rangées de sièges et huit tables par voiture. L'opérateur d'État propose une franchise de bagages plus généreuse (y compris les vélos), ainsi que la possibilité de passer en première classe.


Détails de l'Itinéraire
Après avoir vérifié les panneaux de départ pour ma plateforme, je suis passé par les barrières automatiques et j'ai procédé à l'embarquement de mon train.
Sur Lumo, tous les billets incluent une réservation de siège. Les trains sont toujours très pleins, donc assurez-vous de vous asseoir à votre place assignée. Avec LNER, les trains hors pointe sont moins chargés. Si vous avez un siège assigné, je recommande de vous y asseoir. Sinon, vous êtes libre de vous asseoir à tout siège non réservé (indiqué par une lumière verte au-dessus de chaque siège).

Nourriture et Boissons à Bord
Lumo : Offre un service de chariot à votre siège qui vend des sandwiches, des collations comme des biscuits et des chips, et des boissons comme du café, du thé et des sodas.
- LNER : Dispose d'un magasin à bord que vous pouvez visiter à votre convenance. En scannant un code QR, vous pouvez commander des repas chauds, des collations et des boissons telles que du café et du vin et les faire livrer à votre siège. J'ai essayé le Curry Nanster (un wrap naan rempli de curry) avec un verre de vin blanc.
Lumo et LNER ont tous deux le Wi-Fi à bord, bien qu'il soit assez lent et ait une couverture inégale. C'est suffisant pour naviguer et écouter de la musique, mais vous pourriez avoir du mal à diffuser des vidéos avec. Je vous recommande de télécharger du contenu avant de partir !
Conseils de Billetterie
Omio a rendu super facile la réservation de mes billets de train de Londres à Édimbourg. J'ai juste choisi mon heure de départ et la flexibilité que je voulais pour mon billet, puis mon billet était prêt à partir. Les billets sont généralement mis en vente 12 semaines à l'avance, mais pour certaines dates, vous pouvez réserver jusqu'à 6 mois à l'avance. Lumo est souvent moins cher que LNER, mais ces tarifs bas se vendent rapidement, donc il vaut la peine de réserver tôt !

Meilleurs Conseils et Recommandations Personnelles
- Pour échapper aux foules à King's Cross, dirigez-vous vers le niveau supérieur, où vous pouvez trouver une entrée de plateforme moins connue.
- Arrivez tôt et faites le plein de friandises : La gare de King's Cross a une large sélection de magasins pour acheter de la nourriture avant de voyager. Je vais toujours chez Greggs pour un rouleau de saucisse ou un steak !
- Les meilleures vues sont du côté droit, surtout entre Newcastle et Édimbourg. Faites attention au marqueur de frontière en traversant de l'Angleterre vers l'Écosse.
Conclusion
Voyager de Londres à Édimbourg en train avec Lumo peut être moins cher et un peu plus rapide qu'avec LNER, mais je préfère l'ambiance et l'expérience globale des trains LNER. Leur service plus fréquent est un réel avantage en cas de perturbations, mais honnêtement, il n'y a rien de mal avec Lumo si vous planifiez à l'avance.

La compagnie Trains East Coast propose huit trains quotidiens du lundi au dimanche. Le premier départ quitte la gare de Londres King's Cross tôt le matin et le dernier en début d'après-midi. Entre temps, les trains partent soit toutes les demi-heures soit toutes les heures. Les trains Londres Édimbourg sont directs et le trajet prend un peu plus de quatre heures. Cross Coutry ne propose que deux trajets quotidiens avec correspondance en début et en fin de matinée. Les trains arrivent en moins de cinq heures à la gare d'Édimbourg Waverley.

La gare de Londres King's Cross est située à moins de deux kilomètres du cœur de la ville. Elle est en outre un important arrêt de métro où se croisent presque toutes les lignes du métro londonien : la Circle Line, la Hammersmith and City Line, la Metropolitan Line, la Northern Line, la Victoria Line et la Piccadilly Line. Il sera donc facile de s'y rendre depuis n'importe quel point de Londres. Depuis le centre, comptez quelques minutes. Le trajet sera beaucoup plus long en taxi.

Édimbourg, capitale de l'Écosse, possède des quartiers géorgiens et médiévaux classés au Patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, des musées à ne pas manquer et une atmosphère festive que l'on retrouvera dans les pubs de la ville. La gare d'Édimbourg Waverley est située en plein cœur de la ville ce qui facilite grandement son accès. On pourra donc se rendre dans le centre à pied. En taxi, il ne faudra que quelques minutes et de nombreuses lignes de bus urbains passent aussi par la gare pour rallier les différents points de la ville.
